Despite being one of Africa’s most decorated teams and the country with the most Africa Cup of Nations titles, Egypt had never won a World Cup match before today, having gone home without a victory from the 1934, 1990 and 2018 editions.

New Zealand took the lead through Finn Surman in the 15th minute, heading in from a corner to put Egypt under early pressure. But the Pharaohs responded strongly after the break, with Mostafa Zico equalising in the 58th minute before Mohamed Salah swept Egypt ahead in the 67th. The night was studded with records. Salah, 34, became the oldest Egyptian ever to score at a World Cup, and the oldest African player on record to both score and assist in a single match. Egypt dominated several key areas, registering 19 shots to New Zealand’s 10, with seven on target. They also controlled 56% possession, completed 476 passes, and recorded an 88% pass accuracy in front of a crowd of 52,497.

The result sends Egypt top of Group G with four points from two matches, ahead of Iran and Belgium, who both have two points. New Zealand remain bottom with one point.

For Egypt, this was more than just three points. It was a long-awaited World Cup breakthrough.
